Today, we commemorate the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and honor the Filipinos whose sacrifices secured our freedom and sovereignty.
As we reflect on our history, we are reminded that independence is not only a legacy to be celebrated but also a responsibility to be upheld.
While we celebrate the independence we achieved 128 years ago, we must remember that the struggle for freedom is a continuing duty that every Filipino bears today. Safeguarding our nation’s security, sovereignty, democratic institutions, and national interests remains essential to preserving the independence that previous generations fought to achieve.
This year’s commemoration also comes as we approach the 10th Anniversary of the landmark 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea on July 12, 2026. The Award affirmed the Philippines’ maritime entitlements under international law and remains a testament to the value of the rule of law and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
In recognition of this milestone, I encourage all government offices to extend the display of the Philippine Flag until July 12, 2026. Let this serve as a reminder that the defense of our freedom, sovereignty, and national interests remains a continuing responsibility for every generation of Filipinos.
As we honor our past and exercise our freedoms in the present, may we remain steadfast in securing a peaceful, secure, and sovereign future for the generations that will follow.
